The Seventh Tennessee was organized at Camp Trousdale, in Sumner County. They drilled 6 hours a day to mid July. The First Tennessee Brigade was formed of the 1st, 7th, and 14th Regiments. First TN brigade was ordered to Richmond, but with Confederate victory at Manassas, the orders were changed to join Gens. Lee and Loring. Held in reserve till about 6 p.m. and ordered to reinforce Longstreet and Hill. Tennessee Brigade made final assault on Sumner's corps at the battle of Seven Pines. In 30 minutes Adjutant G. A. Howard, 8 of 10 company commanders, and half of the privates were either killed or wounded. On February 3, 1865 a deserter to the Federals reported that the 7th did not have over 60 men. When surrendered by General Lee on April 9, 1865 there were only 47 men left in this famous regiment. They were under Colonel Samuel G. Shephard. Mark Boeni Collection
