The Lieutenant was a commissioned officer who served as a platoon leader. He also assists the Company Commander, leads larger fatigue details, and serves as a file closer. As platoon leaders, Lieutenants have a large role in skirmish drill. The "1st Lieutenant" should be ready and able to take command of the company in the absence of the Company Commander .
