This is a drawing , which shows a typical Federal calvaryman during the middle of the war. This trooper wears a union sack coat , instead of the traditional calvary jacket. This was common in the army by 1863. The calvary had several major roles in the army. The calvary supported the infantry , gathered intelligence, and helped with screening the movements of the army.
